Our Journey

Wesleyan Assurance Society was founded in Birmingham in the summer of 1841. The Society was originally established to help people overcome the financial problems brought on by the Industrial Revolution. Even then, life assurance and annuities were available.

Over the years the Society has continued to grow and prosper. A key point in its recent history was the merger with Medical Sickness Society in 1997. Wesleyan became a specialist distributor looking after the financial needs of over 60,000 members of the medical and dental professions. The distribution brand is now known as Wesleyan Medical Sickness, providing tailored advice and services to Hospital Doctors, GPs, Dentists and Medical Students.

In 2003 the Society further developed its segmented approach forming a partnership agreement with the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) to provide specialist financial services for its 200,000 strong membership of teachers. This relationship is serviced through Wesleyan for Teachers.

Wesleyan for Lawyers is the Society’s newest distribution brand, launched in 2007 to provide holistic financial services for the legal profession.

Times may have changed but Wesleyan remains committed to its founding principles of trust, honesty and fairness for all. We have gone from being a small local business to one of the UK’s financially strongest life offices*. Named Life Insurer of the Year at the British Insurance Awards in 2008, Wesleyan is an organisation with a fantastic history and a brilliant future.
